MTN Mobile Money Integration Deep Dive

MTN MoMo is Uganda's dominant payment platform. Your app likely needs one or more of these:

  • Collections (receive payments): UGX 2M-5M — customer pays via STK Push prompt on their phone
  • Disbursements (send money): UGX 2M-5M — your system sends money to users (loan disbursements, refunds, agent commissions)
  • Remittances: UGX 3M-8M — cross-border money transfers
  • Account balance check: UGX 500K-1M — check MoMo balance programmatically

MTN provides their Open API for developers, but integration requires careful error handling, timeout management, and reconciliation. We also integrate Airtel Money Uganda as a fallback payment option.

Read our MTN MoMo integration guide for technical details.

Why Android-First for Uganda

  • 95%+ market share: Almost all Ugandan smartphones run Android
  • Budget devices: Most users have entry-level phones (1-2GB RAM) — your app must be optimized
  • Low bandwidth: Many users are on 3G or unstable connections — offline mode is essential
  • Data costs: Data is expensive relative to income — keep your app size under 20MB
  • Google Play dominance: App Store (iOS) has minimal reach in Uganda

We recommend Flutter for cross-platform (Android + iOS) when needed — it produces smaller APKs and better performance on low-end devices than React Native.

Additional Costs to Budget:
  • Google Play Developer Account: $25 one-time
  • Apple Developer Account: $99/year (if building iOS)
  • Server hosting: UGX 100,000-500,000/month
  • Push notification service: Free tier covers most startups (Firebase)
  • MoMo API fees: 1-2% per transaction
  • Annual maintenance: 15-25% of development cost

Frequently Asked Questions

A simple Android app costs UGX 10M-30M. A mid-range cross-platform app costs UGX 25M-60M. A complex enterprise app costs UGX 60M-120M+. MTN MoMo integration adds UGX 2M-8M.

For Uganda, start with Android. 95%+ of your users are on Android. If you also need iOS (for corporate clients or regional expansion), use Flutter — it costs only 30-40% more than Android-only and gives you both platforms from one codebase.

Simple apps take 6-10 weeks. Mid-range apps take 10-16 weeks. Complex apps take 4-8 months. We recommend starting with an MVP (8-12 weeks, UGX 15M-35M) and adding features based on user feedback. This reduces risk and gets you to market faster.
